India tour Of Sri Lanka 2024: Suryakumar Yadav appointed T20I captain

Suryakumar Yadav has been named the captain for the three T20Is for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. After the recent World Cup win and Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20, Suriya Kumar Yadav has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian cricket team. As Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from the T20 format after the World Cup T20 final, they have made themselves available for the ODI series.

Making Suryakumar Yadav the captain of the Indian cricket team seems a bit strange as the Indian senior management has ignored Hardik Pandya, who is senior to Suryakumar Yadav, for the captaincy. Gautam Gambhir’s visit to Sri Lanka will be his first test and first task as Indian cricket team head coach.

Selection Decisions and Changes from BCCI

On Tuesday evening, Indian cricket team selector Ajit Agarkar held an online meeting to finalize the Indian T20 squad for July 22. There have also been some other changes, with pacer Harshit Rana and middle-order batsman Riyan Parag, who just made his debut in the T20 series in Zimbabwe, receiving calls for selection in the Indian ODI squad.

According to some reports, the Indian cricket team’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir and chief selector, Ajit Agargar, have approached and convinced Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to join the squad for the ODI series with Sri Lanka.

As the Indian head coach is eyeing the preparations for the Champions Trophy next year, the presence of experienced players will be crucial to planning the next tough Test season.

The Indian head coach and selectors may have overlooked Hardik Pandya as his recent performances have not improved. He also has fitness issues, and when he was captaining Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he made Some decisions that were not good.

This was a shock to some of the BCCI leadership as Hardik Pandya was Rohit’s vice-captain in the World Cup, and it was highly possible that he would step up as India’s T20 captain in the future. But it is believed that Gautam Gambhir has kept his decision firm on Surya Kumar as he is his long-time favorite player, and hence he has not considered Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant.

It is not at all that Surya Kumar Yadav will be a stranger to the Indian T20 and the new captain, as he has already led the Indian team in seven T20 matches. But when it comes to the future Indian T20 captain, it feels a bit strange as Surya Kumar Yadav is used to bat freely, and the 2026 T20 World Cup is not far away.

The captains keep changing in the short overs format, as earlier, Hardik Pandya was replaced by Shubman Gill as the vice-captain.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in line to play ODIs in Sri Lanka

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have made themselves available for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, and the two players have informed the BCCI that they will be available for the three-match series against Sri Lanka next month.

According to reports,  the BCCI senior selection committee is expected to meet via Zoom on Friday night as board secretary Jay Shah leaves for the International Cricket Council’s annual conference for Sri Lanka.

After consultation, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has decided to replace Pandya with Suryakumar as the T20 captain of the Indian cricket team for the three-match series with Sri Lanka. While the ODI captaincy will remain with Rohit Sharma.

Some in the India team management are surprised at how Surya Kumar Yadav has been made captain of India’s T20 team instead of Hardik Pandya. This could be because of Hardik Pandya, who has been facing fitness issues in the past, and some of his decisions as a captain in the IPL have also been unfathomable.

The Indian management is looking for a great captain for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, and they are eyeing Suryakumar. The board has high expectations from him. Pandya will only be a part of the T20 squad and has not been included in the ODI card. Besides, the senior selection committee has decided to rest Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
